ACRE supports pro-cooperative candidates
From TV commercials to yard signs, the evidence is everywhere that the 2006 election campaign has definitely arrived along with fall's cool breezes. And with the season, comes a critical time for electric cooperatives and the Action Committee on Rural Electrification (ACRE).
Actually, ACRE has been busy at work preparing for this election for many months now. As a political action committee for the electric cooperatives, one of ACRE's key roles is to support candidates for office that we believe are "pro-cooperative." One key way that we do that is by making campaign contributions to those candidates.
Half of the membership money ACRE receives each year goes to the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) in Washington. That money is designated for contributions to congressional candidates only. The rest stays here in Arkansas and we spend that money on constitutional office and legislative races here at home. AECI has its own ACRE account, as does each distribution co-op.
How do we decide which candidates to support? The main criteria include a lawmaker's leadership abilities and his or her stand on issues of importance to Arkansas and the electric cooperatives. The selections are made through a collaborative effort that includes input from local cooperative managers and directors, who maintain close contacts with local and state lawmakers. Through these avenues, ACRE Arkansas can make good decisions on which candidates are truly the cooperatives' friends. And because it is important for you to know how your ACRE money is being spent, ACRE Arkansas is offering a list of all candidates that ACRE is contributing to in the 2006 election.
